2ND NOVEMBER
Proverbs 15:1
“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
Stop and think about your words!
Words shouted in anger are not the words that accomplish good things. Harsh words might feel good for a moment because you get to vent all the anger, stress and frustration that has been building up inside you.
But if you stop and think, you will quickly recognise that nothing constructive was accomplished with those words. In fact, they almost surely made the situation worse. More than that, those two or three little harsh words you say to a friend might forever close the door to you witnessing to them.
Those feelings of frustration and stress should not be stuffed down and ignored; instead, think about how you can express them in ways that do not accuse, but rather share how you feel, and invite the other person to engage in meaningful conversation with you about how they feel.
Train yourself to stop and think about your words before reacting to someone. It will be one of the most valuable disciplines in your life. God wants you to learn self-control as you represent him to the people in your life. He knows that this way of gentleness and patience is not natural to you. Your word for it might even be “impossible.” That’s why he has given you his Holy Spirit—to enable you to live God’s way when you make that choice.
MAKE IT PERSONAL
Why do you think it’s so difficult to let go of your need to to get even or “have the last word”?
