20TH JANUARY
Philippians 2:3-4
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
Live your life asking “What can I do for them?”
From the moment babies are born they are dependent on their parents. Young infants need their parents to change them, feed them, look after them, keep them warm and keep them safe. At this stage in their life, it’s all about what they can get from their parents. This attitude is perfectly fine at this stage. Jesus came into the world as a baby and needed his parents to look after him.
However, Jesus grew up and his focus shifted. He knew that he was the good shepherd and he knew that he came into our world to lay his life down for his sheep. He wasn’t interested in what his parents could do for him, but what he could do for his parents and the whole world. Jesus was not self-focused—he lived his life in a way that was always about others.
As Christians, we are called to do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than ourselves. We are called not to look only to our own interests, but also to the interests of others.
