Matthew 22:35-38
“And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. ‘Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?’ And he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.’”
According to Jesus, the chief end of your life is to love God with all that is in you!
You may have memorised at some point that the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. And this is not in conflict with Jesus’ words. But one is the result and the other is the cause. One is the root and the other is the fruit.
The root, from which all other right things in the Christian life flow, is your all-consuming love for Jesus Christ. If you get loving God right, all the other aspects of your life will become right too. If you love God you’ll obey him and honour him and live to please him. If you love God you’ll love his will for you. If you love God you’ll trust him in the hard times. If you love God, he’ll fill your mind and your speech. If you love God with all your heart, soul and mind you will not be able to help talking about him to the people around you. It will simply flow out of your love for him.
