13TH MARCH
John 4:28-35
“So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, ‘Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?’ They went out of the town and were coming to him. Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, ‘Rabbi, eat.’ But he said to them, ‘I have food to eat that you do not know about.’ So the disciples said to one another, ‘Has anyone brought him something to eat?’ Jesus said to them, ‘My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest?’ Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.’”
Pay attention and start noticing all the moments of ‘sentness’ in your life!
Often we approach evangelism like the disciples. We think that the harvest only comes every now and then in certain specialised circumstances—at special meetings, or on a mission trip, or at an outreach event, or maybe during a conversation we have carefully orchestrated after preparing and praying for months.
Jesus wants the disciples (and us) to learn from his encounter with the woman. “Lift up your eyes”, he says. As the disciples looked up they would have seen the people of the town coming out to meet Jesus in response to the woman’s testimony. “You don’t have to wait for some special ‘harvest’ circumstances,” Jesus is saying. “The fields are white for harvest.”
When you start noticing the moments of ‘sentness’ in your encounters with people, you will begin to see God working in people’s lives through you wherever you go.
MAKE IT PERSONAL:
Look for a moment of sentness as you go through your day today. At the end of the day reflect back on how you responded. Write that down somewhere to reflect on it.
