John 4:15-18
“The woman said to him, ‘Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Go, call your husband, and come here.’ The woman answered him, ‘I have no husband.’ Jesus said to her, ‘You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.’”
Don’t avoid the sin problem!
Jesus has been talking about living water and eternal life. The woman is ready to respond. She says, “Sir, give me this water.” But Jesus knows that turning to God not only means accepting certain things as true, it also involves a sin problem that person has—which keeps them from God.
How does Jesus respond to this woman’s request for living water? “Go call your husband,” he says, knowing that she’s living in an immoral relationship. This woman needs to turn from her old way of life to God. That old way of life can never quench her inner thirst, but God’s living water can.
As you share Christ with people, help them see, not only the One they need to turn towards, but also the way of life they need to turn from. Help them see that the way of life they have been pursuing will never satisfy their inner thirst.
